Four Essential Oils Every Man Should Know

The ADAM Guide To Essential Oils

It’s hard to imagine a time before cosmetics laboratories and big designer perfumes. Yet, delve into the history books, and you’ll find that the use of fragrance dates back centuries, to the hammams of Anatolia and beyond.

It was here, in the ancient version of an ADAM atelier, that grooming experts would extract essential oils from roots, seeds, bark and other plant elements prized, not only for their scent, but for their benefits in everything from hygiene to religious ceremonies.

Today, we know that these highly concentrated ingredients also contain a host of antioxidants and vitamins vital for healthy skin and hair, which is why ADAM continues to harness their powers today within its own grooming range.

To discover some of our favourites, read on for the ADAM guide to the elixirs every man should know.

Four Essential Oils Every Man Should Know

Cedarwood

One of the first essential oils to have ever been distilled, cedarwood has been used for a host of therapeutic purposes as far back as the Ancient Egyptians. A warm, woody elixir found around the world, including black cedarwood from the Turkish coast, it’s often touted for its ability to increase circulation to the scalp, thereby slowing hair loss. As such, it’s one of the main active ingredients in the ADAM haircare range, but it also appears in our signature fragrances where its refreshing scent is used to cut through richer notes of tobacco and musk.

Clary Sage

Known as the ‘Eye of Christ’ in the middle ages, clary sage was once considered a magical, cure-all treatment for everything from eye health to anxiety. Today, the biennial herb maintains its reputation as one of the most versatile ingredients in aromatherapy, but it does its best work when applied directly to the skin. Enriched with the organic chemical linalyl acetate, clary sage works to reduce breakouts, heal inflammation and soothe the epidermis, making it the perfect addition to ADAM’s Charcoal Facewash and Classic Shaving Cream.

Wild Pine

Part of a family of lush green trees found across the eastern Mediterranean region, wild pines regularly reach over 200 ft in height. So, it will come as little surprise to learn that it’s one of the most commonly recommended essential oils for enhancing hair growth. A staple of ADAM’s styling and hair care range, the extract is prized for its antimicrobial properties. This helps prevent itchiness and inflammation, which in turn boosts the hair’s natural smoothness and shine.

Myrtle

When it comes to essential oils lauded for their ability to multitask, few can stand up to myrtle. Derived from a small aromatic shrub, it’s a powerful antiseptic, antioxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial agent all in one. As such, this tea tree alternative is just as at home in cleansing products such as shampoos as it is shaving products for those with sensitive skin. It’s also a renowned mood-booster, thanks to its pleasant, uplifting citrus aroma.
