Meet The Barber: Ali Kaya

It goes without saying that when you visit an ADAM atelier, you're guaranteed to get a great haircut. In part, this is because our spaces draw on the deep history, culture and artistry of the Turkish Hammans, which have been the gold standard in grooming for centuries. But it's also because we are dedicated to finding and recruiting the best barbers from around the world. Whether you're looking for a classic hot towel shave or a modern skin fade, there's a man behind one of our chairs who can create an experience tailored to you. To help you pick, here's a Q&A with Ali, the manager of our Liverpool Street Atelier on everything from styling tricky hair to becoming a barber yourself.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Ali, I'm the Master Barber at ADAM's Liverpool Street Atelier in London. I've been a barber for the last 13 years, so it's safe to say I've done my fair share of haircuts.

What do you love most about the job?

Working as a barber lets me strike up a conversation with all sorts of customers. Some people enjoy sharing their stories with their barbers. This is because we lend them a listening ear, and we do not judge. Believe me, we have heard it all.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I'm a Fenerbahce SK fan, my favourite food is lahmacun, and my favourite dessert is baklava. So basically, I am your typical Turk.

What's one grooming tip you always tell men?

Learn how to shave correctly. Always make sure your hair and skin are wet and soft before you start. After a warm shower is a good time because your skin is clean and moist. An important part of the technique is to shave in the direction that the hair grows to prevent irritation. Then finish off with a post-shave balm to replace lost moisture.

How have you spent lockdown?

Lockdown has been tough on people from all walks of life – mentally, physically and financially. I used the spare time to focus on changing my diet and taking care of my mental health. What kept me motivated was the birth of my daughter, which brought nothing but love and joy to my life.

What are three products you can't live without?

I have fine hair, which can make styling quite tricky, so I use ADAM's sea salt spray before I apply wax or gel to add some texture. I also live in London, which means constant wind and rain. Our texture paste is a godsend for keeping a hairstyle in place. Lastly, a good moisturiser, which is essential for keeping your face hydrated, fresh and healthy.

What's your advice for becoming a barber?

Don't become a barber if you do not enjoy meeting new people all the time. A barber must have good communication and people skills. This is just as important as providing good cuts and shaves.

What about a product every man should have?

ADAM's Shaving Set contains everything you need for getting rid of facial hair. Remember that bad products equal a bad shave and irritated skin, so it’s always worth investing in the tools you use.

What advice would you give to people thinking of cutting their own hair during

Unless you're a barber or are at least confident at cutting hair, don't do it. You may mess up your natural style, which can be tricky to fix.
