Meet The Barber: Mehmet Yaprak
It goes without saying that when you visit an ADAM atelier, you're guaranteed to get a great
haircut. In part, this is because our spaces draw on the deep history, culture and artistry of
the Turkish Hammans, which have been the gold standard in grooming for centuries. But it's
also because we are dedicated to finding and recruiting the best barbers from around the
world. Whether you're looking for a classic hot towel shave or a modern skin fade, there's a
man behind one of our chairs who can create an experience tailored to you. To help you
pick, here's a Q&A with our business partner Mehmet, who has been with us since the start.
Please introduce yourself
My name is Mehmet, I am a business partner at ADAM and my job title is Head of Experience, based in our Mayfair atelier. This means that I am responsible for ensuring the ADAM quality of service is kept up across all eight of our locations, while also working on product development and head hunting new barbers to come work for us.
How long have you been a barber?
I have been a barber for over thirty years, including at ADAM since it opened in 2017. I really
see ADAM as my baby, I always say I have two girls and an ADAM.
What do you love most about the job?
Detailed haircuts, difficult haircuts, unusual haircuts – I love to be challenged daily. I also
love getting to know our clients. I have become long-term friends with some of the guys who
have sat in my chair.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself
I have two daughters and still can't understand how to braid their hair. That's one hair
challenge I am yet to master.
What do you see being the biggest hairstyle of 2021?
A lot of guys have had the chance to grow their hair out in the past year while avoiding the
awkward in-between phase. I predict many will hold on to this with a slightly messy grunge
style.
What's the best way to get the cut you want from your barber?
Ask questions. Barbers know instantly what will suit your face shape so don't be afraid to
lean on them, or even give them full control.
What are three products you can't live without?
Moisturiser, shampoo and, of course, ADAM Anatolia parfum. Applying a fragrance is part of
my morning routine. Even if I'm not going anywhere, I find it gives me a little bit more
motivation for the day ahead.
What about a product every man should have?
For obvious reasons at the moment, Kolonya. It's widely used in Turkey as hand sanitiser,
and we have just launched our own ADAM version. It's 70% alcohol, so it sterilises germs,
but it's also packed with essential oils that benefit the skin.
What advice would you give to people thinking of cutting their own hair during
lockdown?
Avoid the temptation, if you can. Giving your hair a break is one of the best things you can
do for it, but it also gives your barber more to eventually work with. Instead, look for styling
products that are better for longer hair, such as sea salt spray.
