Meet The Barber: Erdem Varol
It goes without saying that when you visit an ADAM Atelier, you're guaranteed to get a great haircut. In part, this is because our spaces draw on the deep history, culture and artistry of the Turkish Hamams, which have been the gold standard in grooming for centuries.
But it's also because we are dedicated to finding and recruiting the best barbers from around the world. Whether you're looking for a classic hot towel shave or a modern skin fade, there's a man behind one of our chairs who can create an experience tailored to you. To help you pick, here's a Q&A with Erdem, Master Barber at our Canary Wharf atelier. He speaks on everything from top product picks to how he became a barber.
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
My Name is Erdem Varol, I was born in Istanbul in 1992 and moved to London in 2017. I have been a barber for 14 years.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN CANARY WHARF
I was a barber in Canary Wharf and then I got promoted to branch manager for ADAM’s Jubilee Branch.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE JOB?
What I love the most about my job is communicating with clients and staff and showing my artwork to the clients (they love it!).
WHAT MADE YOU BECOME A BARBER?
The reason why I became a barber was because I always had a passion towards it, and I always dreamed big. It all started in a little local barbershop in the neighbourhood in Istanbul. I then worked in high end places in Istanbul and when I moved to London, I found ADAM.
TELL US AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF
An interesting fact about myself is that I love Istanbul and I’m a big fan of my Turkish team Besiktas!
WHAT'S ONE GROOMING TIP YOU ALWAYS TELL MEN?
The tip that I give to clients is always to keep your hair and the line around the neck as natural as you can, so it doesn’t look bad when your hair grows out.
IF YOU WERE SPENDING A DAY IN CANARY WHARF, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
If I spent a day in Canary Wharf, I would go for a walk around the shopping centre, daydream across the river, watch the beautiful sunset and probably end the day with a beer in one of the great pubs.
WHAT ARE THREE PRODUCTS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
The Three products I can’t live without are:
1. Turkish cologne (lemon)
2. ADAM’s clay
WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR BECOMING A BARBER?
My advice for someone that’s becoming a barber is, always have a passion about the job. Listen, look, and analyse it well!
WHAT PRODUCT SHOULD EVERY MAN HAVE?
One product that every man should have is the ‘ADAM clay’, it’s a must for people that are after a matt finish. For a more shiny look, any kind of gel is fine.
